As we followed our vision and looked for land to establish "Sanctuary"...the presence of thriving wildlife was a very important part of our search. Our herd of buffalo ( also called bison) live side by side with elk, wolf, and mountain lion, among other wild animals that winter on and pass through the ranch. As a guide in the San Raphael Wilderness of Southern California, Leo worked extensively as a volunteer with the California Condor Recovery Project, and as time goes by we see why we have now come to work with the buffalo. They are one of the greatest gifts we have here at Sanctuary! Like the California Condor, both species were central to Native American culture, and on the verge of extinction. When European settlers arrived in North America, somewhere between 60 and 125 million bison lived here. In 1889 approximately 1,000 bison remained. Conservation efforts have enabled the buffalo population to rebound to about 500,000 in National Parks and private herds.

Their presence here is a powerful gift. It speaks of the past and is a reminder to appreciate the present. We are deeply touched by their spirit continually. They have shared so much with us, leading us on new adventures and to new friends. These are stories to be shared around the campfire, and those that visit us always leave with their own unique story. As a guest here at Sanctuary you'll have the opportunity to observe and connect with these amazing creatures!

We are a working ranch, because of time constraints we offer tours by appointment for groups of 5 or more. It is best to plan in advance to schedule your tour. Adults $7 CAD Children $5 CAD. You'll get to meet "Chester" our 2400lb bull sire and his herd. Call 344-4779 locally or 1-866-400-8400 toll free.

As we worked with buffalo a natural progression took place where we could first learn to feed our family what we considered to be sacred meat, then offer this to others as well. Rocky Mountain Buffalo Company offers you 100% naturally raised buffalo meat. To learn more about our journey in that endeavor , to learn more about buffalo meat and it's high nutritional ratings, and to read testimonials, please go to our website www.rockymountainbuffalo.com
